Best Brands for W build? Okay I will try to make this to the point. Got another '87 W block I am about to get rebuilt to support an intercooled Procharger system for carbureted motor. Block is at engine builder as I type this message. Naturally aspirated, I don't want this engine to have more than 8.

So my heads need to match pistons, cam, roller rockers, pushrods, and lifters. Any advise from the great and wise masters of the Windsor forum is highly appreciated. My personal suggestion would be Trick Flow R heads. I don't know exactly how radical your getting but from what i've seen either one of these would be good. Also, check into Canfield heads. They manufacture some good pieces as well. Hope this helps.Display Options. Already know the part number you need?

I've decided that I'm going with a W stroker for my car. One engine builder I've had discussions with wants to do a instead of a Says he can get more power out of it. What would be the advantages of a over a ? Also, what size heads would work well with theAFRs s?

Sep 3, 1, 1 0 Advantages of more power Disadvantages of more expensive, shorter lifespan the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long How much more power from a over a ? Do you absolutely, positively, need more than that? Then go with the But be prepared to pay more money and have a more temperamental engine compared to a As for the heads, you would want something big if you go At least the s but maybe even the s if you need insane power. AFR s made hp with a roller cam in a If you need more than that, go with the s and a Do you really need or want more that?

May 18, 0 16 mission viejo ca.This here is our ci Stroker W that we just built for our Project Mustang. We're going to show you how to build your own. There is a lot to consider when selecting the parts that will fit your wallet and desires.

But what parts should you spend more of your money on? Follow along with Dr. Wrench, Dale Metlika of Pro Power, while he guides you through his forte that is designing racing engines. I have also worked with the big auto manufacturers and heads-up racers.

I will be sharing my knowledge right here with you guys, so read on and look for more great stories in the near future. You already know that big cubes mean big horsepower and big torque. But, before you just jump right in and slap any old stroker Windsor in between the frame rails, there are probably a million questions you could ask.

If you have been running the standard combination, there are quite a few things to learn about both Windsor engines and stroker Windsors. The affordability and availability of large displacement Windsors means that a standard old has gone by the wayside. I have compiled a top ten list of tips to help you with your first stroker Windsor package.

The base of any good stroker monster combo is the engine block and there are many options to choose from. Blocks are available in a wide variety of configurations, so make sure you choose the correct block for your application.

OEM blocks are typically only good up to limited horsepower levels and should only be used when staying naturally aspirated. Additionally, the main webbing and cylinder walls are typically thinner than a big power package can handle. OEM blocks come in two deck heights: 9. If you are planning on making tons of power and torque, your best option would be a good aftermarket block.

Ford RacingWorld Productsand Dart all offer great blocks for anything from street machines to horsepower race cars. Aftermarket blocks primarily come with the later style 9. These blocks are also available with a much larger bore capability, which allows for more cubic inches with the same stroke.

Larger bores permit greater air flow that is needed with additional displacement. If you are going to make some serious power you will need to get a nice beefy block like this fine Man-O-War cast iron piece from World Products. Deciding on a combination of stroke and bore can be very confusing when trying to purchase a stroker Windsor combination.

A large selection of strokes is available and choosing the right one will depend on how the engine will be used. This may seem simple…just get the biggest stroke, right? Do you plan on revving the engine up to the moon? Do you want a street torque monster? Will you be running a horsepower fogger nitrous kit?

You have to know what your ultimate goal is for this engine project so you can choose the appropriate stroke and cubic inch displacement. It goes up, compresses a violent explosion, and goes down. A piston's job is easy enough to understand, but if you examine what it's required to do, you may be amazed it works at all.

Think about it-at 6, rpm, a piston moves up and down the bore times a second, coming to a complete stop twice on each trip. A piston in a engine at that rpm reaches a speed of 6, feet per minute by the time the crank turns to 76 degrees past TDC.

That's 0 to 75 mph in just 1. With more rpm or stroke, the numbers get meaner, so it pays to be serious about piston selection if you're serious about reliable performance.

Cast vs. Forged One of the first distinctions in the way a piston is manufactured is whether it's cast or forged.

We've all heard these terms applied to pistons, but what's the difference? Actually, the difference is in the way the piston blank is created. In the casting process, molten aluminum is formed in a mold to the general shape of the piston.

Casting has several advantages from a manufacturing point of view. Close tolerances can be held in relation to the piston's finished quality. This minimizes the final machining costs and allows for a lighter piston to be produced with less effort than forging. Cast pistons offer excellent wear and thermal characteristics, allowing for long ring land and skirt life as well as tight running clearances for quiet operation. The main drawback is that cast aluminum is limited in terms of ductility.

In other words, an over-stressed cast piston will suddenly and destructively break when it fails. Forgings, on the other hand, have metallurgical characteristics different from cast aluminum pistons.

Blanks for forged pistons are created from a slug of solid aluminum under extreme pressure in a forging press. The aluminum is pressed into heavy forging dyes to arrive at the rough shape of a piston, forming the piston blank.

Unlike a cast piston, a forged piece results in a denser, more ductile material. A piston-forging die must be designed so that the two halves of the die can be separated and the piston blank removed. This precludes the possibility of designing undercuts in the raw forging.

As a result, a forged piston blank needs considerable machining to create the modern lightweight forged racing piston we are accustomed to seeing. A forged piston is inherently stronger and more forgiving when its limits are exceeded, typically distorting rather than grenading. The working characteristics of both forged and cast pistons vary considerably with the specific material and processes involved in their manufacture. Not all cast pistons are created equal, and the same can be said of forged pistons.
